The author of this statement is Ararat Mirzoyan — a representative of the leadership that handed over Artsakh through a war that cost over 5,000 lives and now presents their treacherous policy as an “achievement.” In essence, they surrendered Artsakh and allowed ethnic cleansing to follow, all in order to sign this “significant, unprecedented” document with Azerbaijan. This announcement marked — or more accurately, confessed — one of the main goals of the 2018 power seizure.
Unintentionally, Ararat Mirzoyan accurately described the very document he helped negotiate. Judging by the disastrous reality, and based on statements made by both Armenian officials and Azerbaijani occupiers, yes — the document is indeed unprecedented.
Neither during the presidencies of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Robert Kocharyan, nor Serzh Sargsyan could anyone have imagined that even under the most unfavorable conditions, such destructive and nationally disgraceful capitulation could be imposed on the Armenian people. And those doing the imposing are your so-called “legitimate” leaders.
It was truly unprecedented for the Armenian government to recognize Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan — especially when even the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs did not consider the conflict resolved. Unprecedented is the occupation of Armenian territories. Unprecedented was the complete ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of Artsakh Armenians. Unprecedented are the demands to remove core provisions from Armenia’s Constitution. Unprecedented are the calls for the “return” of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis to Armenia with restored rights. Unprecedented is the removal of the issue of Artsakh Armenians’ return from international agendas. Unprecedented are the ongoing claims about an uncontrolled “corridor” through Syunik. Unprecedented was the surrender of parts of Tavush to the adversary under the guise of border delimitation.
In general, it is unprecedented to inflict such extensive damage on one’s own country through such internal and external policies.
Even in world history, it is hard to find another case where a national state willingly undermines the foundations of its own existence, immunity, and identity — all in the name of fake and untrustworthy “peace.” More accurately, in the name of deceiving the people once again and securing coveted election votes.
P.S. I forgot to add — Ararat also admits that a constructive conversation with Azerbaijan over the issue of prisoners isn’t happening. But really, is there any issue on which your government is able to hold a constructive dialogue with anyone?
