The candidate of the ruling Civic Coalition, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and the candidate of the largest opposition party Law and Justice Karol Nawrocki received the most votes in the presidential elections held in Poland on May 18 and will take part in the second round of elections to be held on June 1. This was announced by the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Poland Sylwester Marciniak.
“Karol Tadeusz Nawrocki – 5,790,804 votes, which is 29.54%, Rafał Kazimierz Czaskowski – 6,147,797 votes, which is 31.36% of the valid votes,” Marciniak said at a press conference broadcast on TVP Info. “The National Electoral Commission has confirmed that none of the 13 candidates for the post of President of the Republic of Poland has received more than half of the votes.” “The second round of voting will take place on June 1. Karol Tadeusz Nawrocki and Rafał Kazimierz Czaskowski will take part in it,” added the chairman of the National Electoral Commission.
According to Marciniak, the votes of more than 85 thousand people were declared invalid. More than 20,000 ballots had an “X” next to the names of two or more candidates, and 60,000 voters left blank ballots. This is one of the lowest figures in the history of presidential elections in Poland. Marciniak also confirmed a record voter turnout of 67.31%.
