EU leaders insist that Ukraine must determine its own future.

The Ukrainian people must be able to freely determine their own future. The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine. Meaningful negotiations can only take place if there is a ceasefire or a reduction in the intensity of hostilities, dw.com reports.

The leaders of 26 out of 27 EU countries issued a joint statement on August 12. Hungary did not support the call published on the website of the Council of the European Union ahead of peace talks on Ukraine between US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.

In the document, EU leaders welcome Trump’s efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, but at the same time emphasize that “a just and lasting peace that ensures stability and security must respect international law, including the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inadmissibility of changing international borders by force.”
