Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been discharged from the hospital where he was taken following a poisoning attempt. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported this on its X-platform page, citing a source.
The text states that the former leader’s younger brother, Maher al-Assad, was barred from visiting his relative in the hospital. However, former Secretary-General of Presidential Affairs Mansour Azzam was granted such permission.
According to the source, those who attempted to poison Assad intended to discredit the Russian government. They hoped to blame Moscow for the politician’s poisoning.
In January 2025, the British newspaper The Sun reported that unknown individuals attempted to poison the former Syrian president in late December of last year. The attempted poisoning occurred after Assad’s arrival in the Russian capital.
Journalists learned that the former head of state had fallen ill and sought medical attention at a Moscow hospital. Doctors found traces of poison in the politician’s body and were able to stabilize his condition.
