From the Memory Archive: 1992 — “The Defense of Artsakh is a National Cause”

“The defense of Artsakh is a national cause,” said Serzh Sargsyan in 1992, then chairman of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’s Self-Defense Committee.

Today, Serzh Sargsyan — now the third President of Armenia — continues to believe that defending the Homeland, any part of it, is a responsibility shared by the entire nation.

Archival materials cannot be edited — just like one’s own biography or the events of the past. They are already facts — historical facts.

Today, we unexpectedly received this 1992 publication from the newspaper Azg, thanks to a friend who works with archives. This article speaks volumes about those who, even since the First Artsakh War, have tried to demoralize the nation and its defense forces, to devalue the liberation struggle — and more.

This interview is also about the difficult yet honorable process of building the once victorious and proud Armenian army. It speaks of hope, unwavering struggle, and belief.

History teaches us to look to the future by learning from the past.
