German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that on Thursday he asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reduce the number of young Ukrainians coming to Germany as refugees, AFP reports.
“I asked the Ukrainian president to ensure that young people from Ukraine do not come to Germany in even larger numbers, but to serve in their own country. They are needed there,” Merz said.
Merz also stated that changes to German social security regulations would soon be made to reduce payments to Ukrainian refugees, “thereby creating more incentives for them to find work.” Benefits for these refugees will be structured so that incentives to work outweigh incentives to remain on social security,” he said.
