Madagascar’s President Andry Radzivillina said he was in a “safe place.” Media outlets previously reported that he had left the country amid protests. The president was scheduled to address the nation on Monday evening, but it was postponed several times.
“Today, I had to seek refuge to save my life. But even under these circumstances, I continue to search for a way out,” he said live on Facebook, without disclosing his location.
He also called for the preservation of the constitution to resolve the country’s deepening political crisis. “There is only one way to resolve these problems: preserve the constitution in force,” he said live on air.
French radio station RFI reported on Monday that Radzivillina was airlifted out of the country on Sunday by a French military plane.
The opposition leader, citing representatives of the presidential administration, confirmed to Reuters that the head of state had left the country.
