Today, the National Assembly adopted a bill that the Church can no longer alienate monuments without the authorities’ consent, with 66 votes in favor, 20 against, and 0 abstentions.
According to the new amendment, religious buildings included in the state lists of monuments may be alienated by any third party, with or without compensation, only with the consent of the Government of the Republic of Armenia. The Government may grant or deny consent if it believes the property in question may be used for purposes other than public or for its intended purpose.
It should be noted that this bill primarily concerns the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church, as it owns the largest number of historical and cultural monuments.
