The agreements planned for the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the United States do not correspond to the interests of official Yerevan, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Konstantin Zatulin told TASS, commenting on the terms of the peace treaty being prepared between Baku and Yerevan.
Earlier, the media reported that the United States would offer Baku and Yerevan to transfer control over the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” – a 40-kilometer underground transport passage connecting the main part of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan enclave – to a private company.
“This cannot be useful for Armenia in any way, unless, of course, we are talking about Pashinyan personally, since he does not think in terms of national interests. He is trying to integrate Armenia and himself into the Western world, while abandoning his national interests. This, of course, is in the interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey,” Zatulin said.
The parliamentarian noted that if the price of mediation for a peaceful settlement is the transfer of the Zangezur Corridor to US control, then this will become a threat to Iran.
“This, of course, is in the interests of the United States and, to some extent, Israel, since the Zangezur Corridor and the unification of Azerbaijan and Turkey, of course, threaten not only us, but also Iran,” the deputy said.
Recall that on August 8 at 14:30 Washington time and at 22:30 Armenian time, a meeting will be held between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US President Donald Trump, at 23:20 Yerevan time — a meeting between Trump and Aliyev, and at 00:00 — a trilateral meeting.
