In the Czech Republic, two 355-meter radio towers in Liblice, which were considered the highest structures in the country for half a century, were demolished, reports iDNES.cz. České Radiokomunikace used 4.5 kg of Semtex explosives to dismantle them. The explosion took place on October 15 at 11:15 local time. Hundreds of people from the surrounding towns and villages watched the demolition process. Many had brought binoculars with them, some came with children. For the locals, the towers had become a normal part of the landscape and a symbol of home. "We lost our lighthouse and the symbol of our motherland," the witnesses said. The towers collapsed near Colin. During the explosion, it was possible to direct the structures to a relatively small area and limit the consequences of the destruction. During the next 20 days, specialists will continue to dismantle the steel structures. The Lieblitz radio towers were built in the 1970s and were once considered one of the most powerful radio broadcasting structures in Central Europe. The authorities and the operator had discussed the possibility of selling the structures, but the potential buyers could not confirm that they had the necessary funds for repairs and safe operation. After dismantling, the highest structure in the Czech Republic became the 347.5 meter high Krašov TV and Radio Tower. It is located in the territory of Pilsen and was built in place of the previous structure, which was seriously damaged by the Soviet troops in August 1968.
