French Prime Minister Sebastian Likornou said authorities could impose a state of emergency if the need arises. However, in order to handle the crisis caused by violent complaints at this stage, he considers a more appropriate way to set a curfew, the French Press Agency reported. “I am absolutely determined to restore order,” said Likorny after the emergency consultation, adding that it does not exclude the introduction of a state of emergency. “If necessary, I will do it,” the Prime Minister stressed. “But in the current circumstances, setting a curfew and implementing appropriate measures seem like a more appropriate solution given the situation we may face,” he explained. In France, a state of emergency grants authorities temporary powers outside the scope of normal police measures. These may apply in response to a serious threat to public order or national security, such measures may include setting a curfew, restrictions on movement, and a ban on public demonstrations. Likorny said the regional authorities had been asked to impose local restrictions on movement on Monday evening, in particular for the protection of businesses and shops. A map of the areas where the curfew will apply was scheduled to be released later Monday after consultations with mayors.
