On the Greek island of Rhodes, a 25-year-old man died after his car was swept into the sea by a powerful current of heavy rainwater, reports Kathimerini. Heavy downpours have caused widespread flooding, disrupted traffic and forced authorities to close roads. According to the Greek Coast Guard, the man was found unconscious in the sea near Stegna beach on the east coast of the island, not far from Arkangelos village. In total, four cars were swept away by the current of water. Rescuers, police and medical workers arrived at the scene. According to local media, the deceased was working at a hotel and had gone to get his car when he was suddenly swept away by the water flow. The man could not get out of the car. Due to the bad weather, the roads in Rhodes were flooded, some cars were left in the water, and traffic was disrupted. The road section between Arkhangelos and Malonas was closed after a large rock fell, which damaged the road surface and protective barriers. The work of some bus routes was also stopped, schools and community sports facilities were closed. On Wednesday afternoon, the Rhodes Meteorological Station of the National Observatory of Athens recorded 264 mm of precipitation, of which 202 mm fell in approximately six and a half hours. The mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Koliadis, called on residents to refrain from non-essential trips and warned of the dangers of trying to cross flooded roads and watercourses, both by car and on foot. At the same time, the authorities have issued an emergency warning, calling to restrict movement.
