Against the backdrop of emergency security measures in major French cities, Lyon police used tear gas against protesters, reports AFP. On the day of new nationwide protests against the rising cost of living, the authorities are trying to prevent a repeat of the riots and looting that happened a week ago. According to the agency, about 150 people gathered near the center of Lyon in the area where gatherings were prohibited. When some of the protesters tried to block the road, the police immediately fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. Before the actions, police patrols, armored cars and vans of special forces were already roaming around the city. A police helicopter was constantly hovering in the sky, and many shopping centers had closed their doors or stationed security guards at the entrances. At the same time, people were called on social networks to ignore the ban on gathering in the center. A strict security regime was also established in Marseille, where many police cars, armored vehicles and water cannons were brought to the streets. And in Paris, large forces of law enforcement have gathered in Bastille Square. The police repeatedly reminded through loudspeakers that demonstrations in the area are illegal and demanded to move to an alternative route passing through Port d'Italia. The police are ready to deal with new clashes, especially in the neighborhoods that were the most affected by last weekend's riots and looting.
