Media publications questioning the safety of the further operation of the Armenian nuclear power plant do not contain factual evidence and may have political implications. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, during the weekly briefing, commenting on the materials published in a number of media, in which the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan. In the background of the 17th conference of the year, there are concerns about the safety of the Armenian NPP. "The record player, so to speak, has already been clogged with dirt and dust, but they are still trying to do everything to make that creak audible. We are talking about the materials that are dedicated to the future operation of the Armenian nuclear power plant, which allegedly poses a danger to the entire region. The most important thing when evaluating these publications (and you are not the only one asking about it) is to see, which is noticeable even with the naked eye, that they fundamentally lack any factual basis. Considering that the main partner of the Metsamor nuclear power plant is the state corporation "Rosatom", which always responsibly approaches the fulfillment of its obligations, the ambitions of individual journalists will cause nothing but bewilderment. And they only raise questions. at what price did they place those guidelines ("methodichkas")? Moreover, additional questions arise regarding the possible political motivations of such publications. "Perhaps, they are simply due to someone's desire to harm the Russian-Armenian project in the field of atomic energy," Zakharova stated. According to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the reactor facility of the Armenian nuclear power plant is specially adapted to the high seismicity of the region, which makes it really stable against such challenges of the location. "Is there evidence of reliability other than theoretical calculations?" Probably many will ask such a question. calculations are one thing, but what do we have in practice? The proof of the reliability of the station is that during the devastating earthquake of Spitak in 1988, all safety systems worked in normal mode. During the past years, "Rosatom" together with the Armenian nuclear engineers has done significant work in the direction of increasing the safety and reliability of this plant. At the beginning of October of this year, the safety of its operation until 2031 was confirmed. The program of activities for 2027-2030 was agreed with the aim of extending the operation period of the nuclear power plant until 2036. By the way, official Yerevan regularly emphasizes its interest in this issue. In particular, it is planned to modernize the key systems for responding to emergency situations. All activities are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the IEA and international standards. The agency's mission concluded in 2025 that the nuclear power plant meets safety standards, including seismic safety.
