Today, on October 22, in the court of Armavir region, the court hearing in the case of Gevorg Nersisyan, the brother of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, and Hambardzum Nersisyan, the latter's son, is underway. In the previous session, the public prosecutor demanded a sentence of 3.5 years for Gevorg Nersisyan, and 7.5 years for his son. At today's court session, defense attorney Smbat Minasyan stated that they do not agree with the guilty verdict, they will appeal, but presented mitigating circumstances. First, it was established that Gevorg Nersisyan had no previous convictions, is over 65, has health problems, and Hambardzum Nersisyan, who also does not accept the accusation, has three minor children, including a toddler. "As for the punishment, the accuser demanded 7 years and 6 months imprisonment for Hambardzum Nersisyan, 3 years and 6 months for Gevorg Nersisyan. This approach is incomprehensible to me, I don't know whether the prosecutor decided by himself or was assigned to him, although, studying the practice, at the moment there is no independent decision-making body. For example, why did they want 3 years and 6 months for Gevorg Nersisyan, it is incomprehensible to me," said Minasyan. The defender requested to impose a minimum sentence on Gevorg Nersisyan and not to apply it conditionally by setting a probationary period, in the case of Hambardzum Nersisyan, to impose a sentence of 4 years and not to apply it conditionally by setting a probationary period. "They give at least six months to do nothing, but in this case, 7 years and 6 months seems too much to do nothing," said Minasyan. After listening to the positions of the parties and taking into account the fact that it is necessary to study the factual data in order to make a verdict, judge Gevorg Manukyan decided to postpone the court session. It will continue on November 12 at 15:00.
