The second magnetic storm of this fall will probably occur on Earth on September 24. Scientists of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences have given such a prediction. The reason must be the impact of a large coronal hole on the Sun. Earth will reach the edge of the coronal hole According to scientists, the coronal hole is a rather large circle that stretches from the south pole of the Sun to the equator. It is expected that its equatorial edge will also be directed towards the Earth and will cause a geomagnetic disturbance. Coronal holes are the parts of the solar atmosphere where the magnetic field lines are open. From them, the accelerated flow of the solar wind leaves the space. When such a flux reaches Earth, it can disrupt its magnetosphere and cause magnetic storms. The first storm of September started after the plasma discharge The previous magnetic storm started on September 8. A few days before that, the Sun had emitted a cloud of plasma towards the Earth. It reached the planet in the afternoon of September 7, after which geomagnetic disturbances continued for several days. The new storm, according to the forecast of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will already be associated with another solar process - the flow of matter from the coronal hole. At the same time, scientists note a general decrease in solar activity. Earlier, in the laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it was reported that in the last two years it has decreased almost three times. Historically, some of the highest levels of solar activity were observed in the mid-20th century, and the lowest levels were recorded between 1800 and 1825. Thus, separate magnetic storms can also occur against the background of a general decrease in the activity of the Sun. local changes in the solar atmosphere and solar wind flows are enough for them.
