The cooperation between Tehran and Moscow will play an important role in ensuring regional stability. It was announced at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran by Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of Iran. “Cooperation between Iran and Russia will play a proper role in establishing stability in the region. We are determined to continue our relations,” Arashchi said at a press conference. He noted that during the negotiations with the Russian counterpart, the parties discussed the security situation in the Persian Gulf and the Ormuz Strait. Artsakhi called it a direct consequence of the US-Israeli military actions against Iran, which began on February 28 and, he claimed, continue in various ways. “The war imposed by the US and the Zionist regime (Israel), as well as the economic blockade, are the main sources of instability in our region,” the head of Iran's foreign ministry said. Arghchi also expressed serious concern about the situation in the Caspian Sea, particularly the attacks on ships. He warned that such incidents could have serious consequences for regional peace and security, and cause irreversible damage to the fragile Caspian ecosystem. The parties also paid particular attention to the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Artsakhi noted that Tehran and Moscow have a common position on the need to reduce tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, as well as coordinate efforts to combat terrorist threats. The talks also touched upon the situation in Palestine, Lebanon and Yemen. Artsakhi stressed the need to stop the genocide of Palestinians, as well as, in his estimation, Israel's dangerous expansionist policies in the region. The Iranian foreign minister noted that Tehran and Moscow are against the unilateral actions of the United States and intend to continue cooperation on international platformsto promote a multilateral approach to solving global problems. He also reaffirmed the willingness of the two countries to maintain cooperation within the framework of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), calling the talks with Artsakh Lavrov important, full-fledged and effective. He noted that the strategic relations between the two countries have entered a new stage after the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement for a period of 20 years and the start of its implementation. The document was signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025 by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Its implementation officially began in October of the same year. Artsakhi added that economic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow is developing successfully and there are no serious obstacles to further expansion of bilateral ties. According to him, the negotiations should contribute to deepening relations between the two countries and strengthening long-term regional stability and security.
