The Canadian government has no interest in acquiring nuclear weapons, according to Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty, according to The Globe and Mail.
“Canada has absolutely no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons,” he said, adding that the Canadian government is committed to upholding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which the country joined in the late 1960s.
The minister reiterated the government’s intention to rebuild and reequip the country’s armed forces
In 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to allocating $84 billion to defence over the next five years. This represents the largest military expenditure in the same period since the 1950s.
