Israel withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Israel is withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council, Ynet reports, citing the country’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.

“The UN has traditionally protected human rights violators, while obsessively demonizing the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel,” he said. Saar stressed that, in his opinion, the UN is complicit in the spread of anti-Semitism.

On February 4, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing his country from the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The signing took place less than an hour before Trump received Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

The White House believed that the council “is not fulfilling its mission and continues to be used as a protective body for countries that commit horrific human rights violations.”
