The US Can’t Play the Role of the World’s Policeman Forever: US Ambassador to NATO

The United States can’t play the role of the world’s policeman forever, said US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, commenting on the new US National Security Strategy at the international summit in Doha.

“The United States can’t always be the world’s policeman. We can’t be a rapidly deployable force that moves around the world and intervenes in every conflict,” Whitaker said.
He emphasized that under the new strategy, Washington will rely more on its regional partners, including Qatar, to do some of the heavy lifting. He also noted that Qatar is one of the US’s closest neutral partners.

Whitaker attributes this strategy to Washington’s desire to see its allies develop, including in NATO.

“We want our allies to develop so that we don’t have to constantly patrol aircraft carriers and warships around the world,” the ambassador added.
