At least 109 migrants have died and another 116 people are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports. The ship was heading from Djibouti to Yemen. According to the organization, 52 men, 42 women and 15 children were among the dead. The boat overturned near Guhere settlement, north of Obok town, on Thursday evening. The survivors of the disaster told about it. More than 80 people managed to be saved. According to IOM, all the survivors are citizens of Ethiopia. The head of mission of the International Organization for Migration in Djibouti, Alexandre Kuasak, characterized the incident as a tragic death of a large number of people. According to him, the employees of the organization together with the local authorities provide emergency aid to the victims. Kuasak also emphasized that this tragedy once again shows the dangers migrants face on the route between the Horn of Africa and Yemen in search of economic opportunities. The Djibouti to Yemen sea route is part of the migration corridor used by people traveling from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. Attempts to cross the sea in overloaded and unsafe ships regularly lead to deaths.
