British Armed Forces chief Richard Knighton said in an interview with the Financial Times that the country is lagging behind European alliesin confronting the growing threat from Russia. According to him, Moscow is increasingly willing to take risks, and the scale of Russia's alleged actions in Europe is no longer allowed to be limited by the concept of “hybrid activity”. “This is the most dangerous period I can remember in my adult life,” Knighton said, noting that the threat from Russia and, more broadly, other states continues to grow. According to the commander-in-chief, Britain should “reach out to European allies” who are “better aware of the Kremlin's willingness to take risky action.” Knighton stressed that this is about targeted killings, sabotage and cyber attacks, noting that there is evidence that Russia is involved in such activities in Europe and, to some extent, the UK itself. Moscow had previously denied its involvement in hybrid attacks in European territory. European special services, meanwhile, are investigating a number of cases of threats of explosions to airlines and news organizations. As representatives of intelligence agencies told the Financial Times, several countries are conducting a joint investigation to determine the source of the threats. At the same time, the conclusions about the perpetrators are still far from final. Some in the intelligence community consider Russia to be the most likely organizer. Knighton also said that British authorities should explain to the population the nature of the Russian threat and justify the need to increase defense spending.
