France opposes the appointment of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian politician who lost the elections, as a kind of compensation, to the position of the Secretary General of the United Nations. This was announced by the spokesperson of the French government, responding to the question of Senator Stephane Demy, whether it is possible to appoint a figure deprived of power. "The seat of the UN Secretary General should not be turned into a consolation prize for the leader who was defeated in the elections and rejected by his own people," the French official emphasized. He also reminded that in March Marine Le Pen personally went to Budapest and participated in Orbán's election campaign. Official Paris emphasizes that it will not allow the weakening of the United Nations, as France is one of the founders of that structure. According to the spokesperson of the government, the organization should not be paralyzed by the steps of the superpowers that are trying to impose the right of the strong on the international community. France is convinced that justice and freedom for all peoples can be ensured only under the conditions of a world order based on rules and international law. Cooperation within the framework of the United Nations stems not only from France's foreign policy principles, but also from the country's national interests. The official added that without multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation, it is impossible to effectively protect people from wars, risks of artificial intelligence, climate changes and epidemics. Being a permanent member of the UN Security Council, France is in favor of the radical reform of the structure, so that it becomes more legitimate and representative. In particular, Paris proposes to limit the veto right of the Security Council permanent members in cases where it is necessary to protect the civilian population. As examples of such crises, the speaker mentioned Sudan, Ukraine, the Gaza Strip and Iran. He emphasized that France expects from the new Secretary General of the United Nations reforms that strengthen the structure, not steps that will shake the confidence in it.
