China is starting the construction of a semi-submersible land platform, which will become the world's first mobile autonomous "artificial island". According to the "South China Morning Post" (SCMP) periodical, it is planned to be built by 2030. The project's lead developer, Shanghai Jiaotong University, has signed a construction contract worth more than 2.7 billion yuan ($405 million) with a shipbuilding company that is part of China's state-owned shipyard, according to the publication. in the structure of the corporation (China State Shipbuilding Corporation, CSSC). As the paper notes, during deep-water and oceanic expeditions, it is often difficult for traditional research vessels to remain stationary in the conditions of stormy winds and strong waves. Meanwhile, stationary offshore platforms, although characterized by high resistance to wind and wave effects, lack their own engines and cannot be moved according to changing research problems. Thus, the "revolution" of the new platform lies in the combination of mobility and stability. It is expected that this "floating island" will be able to move at a speed of 11 knots (about 20 km/h) and simultaneously provide working conditions for more than 200 researchers. The "stationary all-weather floating research complex" is projected to be 138 meters long and 85 meters wide, with the complex's main deck located 45 meters above sea level, approx. The size of a 15-story building. As the periodical notes, six laboratories will operate on the platform, designed to carry out scientific research in various fields.
