Presidential elections are being held in Brazil on Sunday, in which current head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro are fighting for votes, dpa reports. About 158.7 million people have the right to vote. Lula, representing the Workers' Party, is running for the fourth non-consecutive term of the presidency. He already managed Brazil from 2003 to 2010. His rival, Flavio Bolsonaro from the Liberal Party, is participating in the presidential elections for the first time. He is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who lost to Lula in the 2022 elections. The main topics of the campaign are the fight against crime, the role of the state in the economy and social sphere, the independence of the Supreme Court, as well as relations with the United States. Lula advocates the continuation of social programs and government investments. Flaviu Bolsonaro emphasizes reducing the role of the state and tightening measures against crime. There are 13 candidates participating in the elections, but the main battle is centered around Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro. If none of the candidates receives more than half of the valid votes, the second round will take place on October 25. The latest polls show a small difference between the two main candidates, but do not allow us to talk about a certain result of the elections. At the same time, Brazilians elect two-thirds of the Senate, all 513 deputies of the Chamber of Deputies, governors of 26 states and the Federal District, as well as deputies of regional legislative assemblies. Voting is mandatory in Brazil. Thanks to the electronic counting system, the first results are expected shortly after the polls close. Jair Bolsonaro, who lost to Lula in 2022, is currently serving a sentence of house arrest after being sentenced by the Supreme Court to more than 27 years in prison for the attempted coup. Flavio Bolsonaro continues to campaign, also relying on his father's political legacy.
