Municipal authorities cannot interfere with the work of federal law enforcement officers, said Glendale Mayor Artashes Kasakhyan, referring to the checks and arrests carried out by federal immigration authorities in the Armenian-majority city. to those who have caused concern among the local Armenian community in recent days. According to Kasakhyan, the city authorities do not cooperate with the federal government in the implementation of immigration operations, and are not authorized to interfere in them. According to the mayor, federal agents have carried out operations not only in Glendale, but also in other communities in California and the United States. According to him, one of the main problems is that residents often cannot understand who is being targeted during immigration operations. The mayor noted that people who seek asylum or are in the process of obtaining permanent residence status are also arrested. "People who witness these actions cannot distinguish who exactly is being arrested, and the lack of transparency causes great anxiety and concern," Kasakhyan emphasized. The mayor of Glendale said that they have no information on how many Armenians were arrested as part of immigration operations. "We do not have such data, because we do not cooperate with the federal government, and they do not cooperate with us on these issues. This is disappointing for us," he added.
