Several thousand people took to the streets of Lisbon to protest against the rising cost of living and housing. A few hundred more people took part in a similar action in Porto, reports the Portuguese public broadcaster RTP. In Lisbon, the participants gathered in Intendente Square, after which they marched through Almirante-Reich Avenue. The action was organized by the public platform "You can't live like this anymore", which previously held similar demonstrations in Aveiro, Braga and Porto. Juan Krush, one of the organizers of the Lisbon action, announced that the time has come to fight against "housing terrorism". The participants of the protest protested against the high rents, due to which many have to look for an apartment far from the cities or continue to live with their parents because they cannot afford a separate apartment. On the posters, the protesters also wrote about the difficulties of paying daily expenses. Among the slogans were demands to take action on the housing crisis and rising prices of basic necessities. Some participants also recalled the story of the Spanish woman Maricarmen Abascal, who at the age of 87 was evicted from the house where she had lived since she was young. Organizers are calling for price controls on essential goods and fuel, as well as taxes on the super profits of large companies in the banking, energy and trading sectors. In addition, the platform argues that it is necessary to adopt additional measures to solve the housing crisis, which makes it difficult for residents of Portuguese cities to access affordable housing.
