16 people died and 10 more residents were evacuated as a result of a fire that broke out in a care home for the elderly in the village of Villa-Comuy in the south of Chile. This is reported by La Tercera periodical. The fire broke out late on Friday evening in the Pitrufken region of Araucania region, about 32 kilometers from the city. The fire broke out around 22:30 local time. Seven fire-rescue squads arrived at the scene, as well as ambulance crews from the hospitals of Villa-Comu, Pitrufken and neighboring settlements. The regional office of Chile's National Emergency Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) confirmed that the fire engulfed the building of a care home for the elderly at kilometer 21 of the S-70 road in the Villa-Comuy district. General Miguel Herrera, head of the Carabinieri Department of Araucania, said that only 10 people were evacuated from the building. According to him, firefighters found the bodies of 16 victims inside. The circumstances of the fire are being investigated by the specialists of the police criminological laboratory (Labocar) and the employees of the OS-9 unit, on the instructions of the prosecutor's office. The investigation is being conducted under the leadership of the Organized Crime and Homicide Investigation Team (ECOH) of the Araucania Regional Prosecutor's Office. At dawn on Saturday, firefighters, carabinieri and representatives of the local administration continued to dismantle the rubble and provide security at the scene. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The authorities provided a temporary shelter for the victims and evacuees in the La Frontera school building.
