The European Union views the Nord Stream project as Moscow's energy weapon and, despite the negotiations between the US and Russia, is categorically against the restarting of gas pipelines. Press secretary of the European Commission, Paula Pinu, announced this in a briefing. "We know all too well the hidden price of dependence on Russia for fossil fuel purchases. They turned that addiction into their weapon, we had to pay for it, and we will not forget it," Pinyu emphasized. The press secretary referred to the position of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressing that Brussels is fundamentally opposed to the restart of the "Northern Stream" even if peace is established in Ukraine. He also assured that until 2027, the EU members' agreement to completely abandon Russian gas remains in force. Earlier, within the framework of negotiations between Moscow and Washington, the issue of restarting the work of the "North Stream" was discussed by the special representatives of the presidents of the two countries, Kirill Dmitriev and Jared Kushner. Restarting the pipelines was considered part of a possible "peace deal" to end the war in Ukraine. However, the officials of the White House who participated in the negotiations even admitted that the restoration of the gas pipelines damaged by the explosions four years ago is unlikely even in the medium term. Nord Stream 1 was built under the Baltic Sea in 2010-2012, connecting the Russian port of Vyborg and the German Greifswald. After all, the construction of "North Stream 2" stretching from Luga to Germany was completed in 2021, but it has not been put into operation. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Nord Stream 1 continued to operate, while Russia's Gazprom reduced the volume of gas supplied to Europe, citing technical problems caused by Western sanctions. On September 26, 2022, the Nord Stream gas pipelines were damaged as a result of explosions near the Danish island of Bornholm. In the summer of 2025, Italian authorities arrested Sergei Kuznetsov, a former officer of the Ukrainian forces, on suspicion of sabotage and extradited him to Germany. This fall, the trial of a former officer accused of involvement in the explosions began in Germany.
