The Armenian Dat Central Council calls on the members of the UN Security Council and the governments of all UN member states to reject Turkey's nomination of Feridun Sinirlioglu for the post of UN Secretary General. in "The Secretary-General must be the impartial guardian of the UN Charter and the first voice in the world against mass atrocities. Mr. Sinirlioglu's activity proves the opposite. for decades, he has pushed the political agendas of the Turkish government, including the denial of the Armenian Genocide in the very documents circulated at the United Nations. 2020 On October 16, being the Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN, Mr. Sinirlioglu signed a letter addressed to the Secretary General (UN document A/75/525-S/2020/1024). In it, he claimed that in 1915 the events were not genocide and continue to be the subject of "legal debate". He sent that letter in the third week of Azerbaijan's attack on Artsakh. In it, he described as "baseless" the information about the presence of foreign fighters in the conflict zone, although Russia, France and the United States have already confirmed that Syrian mercenaries are stationed there. The letter also accused the Armenian diaspora organizations of transporting fighters to the front "under the guise of charity" without any evidence. Three years later, more than 100,000 Armenians were forcibly displaced from Artsakh. This was not the only case. In 2010, as Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Sinirlioglu went to Washington to work against the US House of Representatives resolution reaffirming the Armenian Genocide. His ministry then accused the Constitutional Court of Armenia of imposing "preconditions" on the Armenian-Turkish protocols, which became an excuse for Ankara to suspend their ratification. in 2026 in July, being the Secretary General of the OSCE, Mr. Sinirlioglu, during the conversation, convinced that he was talking to the RA Prime Minister, said that he would "study" how the OSCE could support the dismissal of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Four international human rights and religious freedom organizations condemned the remarks, calling them incompatible with his position, and called on him to retract them. Mr. Sinirlioglu is also unable to ensure the political neutrality required by the position of UN Secretary General. He is widely known as a close confidant of President Erdogan, nominated by him personally. Article 100 of the UN Charter prohibits the Secretary-General from seeking or receiving instructions from any government. Meanwhile, in almost every crisis that the next Secretary General has to deal with, his own government is a party to the conflict or the main actor: Cyprus, the South Caucasus, Syria, Ukraine. Turkey continues to occupy more than a third of the territory of Cyprus, a member state of the United Nations, in defiance of Security Council resolutions. At the same time, it is also the Secretary General who should lead the peaceful settlement of these conflicts. Regarding the Genocide Convention, the Secretary General speaks on behalf of the whole world. The UN cannot be led by a man who denied the genocide in an official document circulated in the UN and devoted his entire career to silencing the truth about the first genocide of the 20th century. Trusting him to the UN's top post would send a devastating message to survivors of mass atrocities everywhere. Therefore, we call for: The members of the Security Council, especially the permanent members, should not support the candidacy of Mr. Sinirlioglu, neither in the official voting nor during the official nomination in the Council. All members of the UN. Authorities insist that the next Secretary-General has a proven track record of unconditional commitment to genocide prevention and the independence required by Article 100. For Mr. Sinirlioglu to state publicly whether he able to defend his 2020 the denial of the Armenian Genocide contained in the letter, and whether he withdrew his offer to support the dismissal of the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. We stand in solidarity with those governments, communities and civil society organizations. with the authorities who have expressed concern about this candidacy. We call on Armenians and friends of the Armenian people around the world to address the governments and elected representatives of their countries," the message states.
