US President Donald Trump has announced his willingness to cancel the sanctions imposed on Turkey under the CAATSA law, although a clear decision in this direction has not yet been made. In response to the question about the circumstances preventing the lifting of sanctions, Trump emphasized that he will continue active contacts with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling him his friend. "I will always make sure that he is satisfied," said the head of the White House. Back in July, during a meeting with Erdogan during the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump announced his intention to lift sanctions on Ankara and consider the possible sale of F-35 fighter jets. Washington pushed Turkey out of the F-35 program in 2019, when the latter bought Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. The US claimed that the Russian system threatens the safety of F-35 technologies and is incompatible with NATO standards. As a result, in December 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on the Turkish military industry and a number of high-ranking officials within the framework of CAATSA. According to the Turkish side, the acquisition of S-400s was due to the need to urgently strengthen air defense, since it was not possible to obtain American "Patriot" complexes. At the same time, Ankara has repeatedly denied Washington's concerns that the S-400s conflict with NATO systems or the F-35 program. Although Trump assured in July that the sanctions will be lifted, the issue is still pending. In addition, Turkey's return to the F-35 program also faces legal obstacles. in July, the US State Department informed the Congress that Ankara has not yet provided the necessary conditions for this.
