Human rights defender Anahit Manasyan strongly condemns the incident involving the deputies in the National Assembly. The defender reaffirms that the parliament should be a platform for democratic discussions, not a "battlefield". Any manifestation of violence by high-ranking officials, including deputies, contributes to the spread of approaches in the society to perceive violence as a means of resolving differences and to justify it. The exclusion of violence in public speech and behavior is the responsibility of the representatives of state power. The human rights defender demands the exclusion not only of behavior implying violence, but also of any speech justifying violence. The incident should be the subject of a proper investigation in accordance with the law. Such incidents are even more serious the approaches justifying domestic violence, the inadmissibility of which the Defender of Human Rights referred to today in the statement issued in connection with the public discussions on the prevention of domestic violence.
