Construction of another CAP1000 reactor as part of a new energy project has begun in the city of Lufeng in the southern province of Guangdong, the China Daily newspaper reported.
The project, which involves the construction of six reactors, is being implemented by the China General Corporation of Nuclear Power (CGN). The CAP1000 is a Chinese version of the AP1000 Westinghouse project. Its peculiarity is that all large modules are manufactured in factories and then installed on the site in finished form. Reactor number 5 began to be assembled in 2022, the sixth – in 2023.
Once all six reactors of this project are commissioned, they will generate a total of about 52 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an amount equivalent to that generated by burning up to 15.77 million tons of coal. Construction of reactor number 1 began on February 24.
