The head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen sent a letter to the leaders of the 27 EU countries, in which she presented her plan to rearm the community with a budget of €800 billion. As she told journalists in Brussels, the plan will be discussed at an emergency EU summit on March 6 in the Belgian capital.
“The EU rearmament plan can mobilize about €800 billion for defense spending for a secure and sustainable Europe,” she said.
According to her, the plan consists of five points. Thus, von der Leyen proposes that EU countries increase current defense spending by 1.5% in order to raise €650 billion for weapons production. In addition, the European Commission intends to attract €150 billion in loans for the production of air defense systems in the EU and weapons for Ukraine.
