The International Court of Justice will issue an order on interim measures against the UAE on May 5 in a case filed by Sudan, which accuses Abu Dhabi of violating the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. This was stated in a statement by the court.
In March, Sudan filed a lawsuit with the UN court, accusing the UAE of violating its obligations under the convention with respect to the Masalit ethnic group living in Sudan, particularly in the state of West Darfur. The application was accompanied by a request for interim measures against the UAE. Khartoum accused Abu Dhabi of supporting the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF), which is involved in clashes against the Sudanese army. Public hearings on the Sudanese request were held on April 10. The court’s ruling will be issued at 15:00 local time (16:00 Moscow time).
The situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023 due to disagreements between the chairman of the country’s Sovereign Council and army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of the RSF Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo. The main contradictions between them are related to the timing and methods of forming a unified armed forces, as well as who should hold the post of commander-in-chief – a professional military man, which al-Burhan advocates, or an elected civilian president, which Dagalo insists on.
