The main goal of the upcoming visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Armenia will be to ensure the immutability of the geopolitical map of the South Caucasus.
As reported by Armenpress, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi touched upon the goals of the Iranian President’s upcoming visit to Armenia in an interview with the IRNA agency.
“Our main concern is to prevent any changes in the geopolitics of the region, to prevent the penetration of foreign forces into the region,” the Iranian Foreign Minister said.
He specified that the inadmissibility of geopolitical changes means changing internationally recognized borders, moving them, or violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states of the region.
“We have clearly stated that we will not tolerate this. Our policy has always been clear,” Araghchi emphasized.
Referring to the declaration signed in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan under the mediation of the United States, he stressed that both Yerevan and Baku have clearly stated their commitment to respecting existing borders and sovereignty.
“From this point of view, it seems that our geopolitical problems have been resolved for now. But we will closely monitor whether they will remain committed to this principle in the future.”
Araghchi also expressed Iran’s concerns about the United States.
“There are concerns that this route could become a pretext for the presence of American troops in the region,” he said.
However, according to the Iranian Foreign Minister, senior Armenian officials, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, have given Tehran assurances that American troops or even private American security companies will not enter Armenia via this route.
The Armenian side assured that it knows Iran’s “red lines” and will respect them in the future.
Araghchi noted that these issues will be discussed in detail during Pezeshkyan’s upcoming visit to Armenia.
