The Zangezur Corridor is of strategic importance to Turkey. Turkish news agency Hürriyet visited the village of Kotam in Nakhchivan, preparing a report on the so-called “Zangezur Corridor”.

Turkish news agency Hürriyet visited the village of Kotam in Nakhchivan, located on the border with Iran and Armenia, preparing a report on the so-called “Zangezur Corridor”.

We were in the region where the “Zangezur Corridor” will pass, the construction of which is on the agenda of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, Turkey and the United States. Construction work has not yet begun at the intersection of the borders of Nakhchivan, Armenia and Iran. The Soviet-era railway is still standing.

To get from the easternmost point of Turkey to the easternmost point of Nakhchivan, we first flew to Igdir and then crossed the border into Nakhchivan. No passport was required. I passed customs control in a simple way, with only an ID card. In the eastern part of Nakhichevan is Ordubad, and on its outskirts is my destination, the village of Kotam.

In any case, if the corridor is opened, either this railway will be repaired or a new line will be built parallel to it.

So when the corridor opens, it will be visible to Iran. And a little to the side is the border outpost of Nakhichevan. A little lower you can see the positions of the Armenian border guards.

Turkey sees this corridor as a direct land route with Azerbaijan and other Turkic-speaking states in the region, so it is of strategic importance from our point of view. Iran was initially against this project.

However, after Trump’s intervention, Armenia withdrew its objection, and on August 8, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan signed a preliminary agreement on this corridor at a meeting organized by Trump in Washington, D.C., at the White House.

The project was called “Trump’s Path to International Peace and Prosperity.”
