People’s philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has been under what appears to be illegal arrest for over 100 days. Karapetyan’s defense attorney, Aram Vardevanyan, wrote about this on his Facebook page.
He recalls that in September 2025, several petitions and applications were submitted to the head of the investigative team (including the Chairman of the Investigative Committee) and the head of the agency overseeing the prosecutor’s office (including the Prosecutor General). “There is one main demand: ensuring minimal diligence and legality in the conduct of investigative actions. I can confirm that the investigation, which has lasted over 100 days, is no different from the events of June 17, 2025. This is political persecution, complete inaction, solely for the purpose of illegal detention, based on the justification of Facebook.” “I have repeatedly insisted and continue to insist that not a single case similar to S. Karapetyan’s or comparable in scale of lawlessness has been recorded in Somalia. Therefore, this case is the simplest way to test whether democratic values exist in Armenia only in words or whether they actually exist in practice,” the lawyer explained.
