Hundreds of books damaged by water at the Louvre

According to NBC News, hundreds of books and other documents were damaged by a water leak in the Louvre’s Department of Egyptian Antiquities in Paris.

“The leak damaged between 300 and 400 works,” said Francis Steinbock, the museum’s deputy director general.

He said these were Egyptology journals and scientific documents used by researchers. These collections date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

“Not a single book, part of our cultural heritage, was damaged. These are extremely useful and frequently used documents, but they are not unique in the world. They will dry out, we will send them to a curator for restoration, and then return them to their original location,” a museum spokesperson noted.

Tribune de l’Art previously reported on a water leak at one of the world’s most famous museums on November 26. This information has now been officially confirmed.
