This is tantamount to a sentence for the entire Armenian nation. Statement by Ruben Vardanyan’s family

Today we learned that Ruben Vardanyan, beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, has been sentenced to twenty years in prison, reads a statement from the family of former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan.

“The verdict of the Azerbaijani military court is shocking, though not unexpected. Even 874 days ago, from the moment of his illegal arrest, it was clear that the outcome of this trial was predetermined. During this time, no evidence has been presented to support any of the charges against him.

Ruben was deprived of the basic guarantees of a fair trial, including legal representation, access to an international lawyer, and the participation of independent media in the proceedings. The hearings were held behind closed doors and under conditions incompatible with fair trial standards under international law and even Azerbaijani law.

Despite attempts to discredit Ruben’s reputation as a humanitarian, philanthropist, and social entrepreneur, the support of governments, civil society leaders, and international experts gives our family strength and hope.

Anyone who knows Ruben personally or has had contact with him understands the absurdity and baselessness of the charges against him.

This is not just a trial for Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian prisoners; it is a verdict on the Armenian people as a whole.

We will continue our efforts to secure his and other Armenian prisoners’ release. We call on international leaders, in accordance with international law, to take all appropriate measures to ensure their freedom and protect their rights.
