“TRIPP is not a corridor, but a road”: Iranian Ambassador to Armenia

“TRIPP is not a corridor, but a road,” the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia stated during a meeting with students at Yerevan State University, according to Azatutyun.

Have Tehran’s concerns about the program, implemented with US participation, been dispelled? Khalil Shirgolami asked Azatutyun.

“We have very good relations with the Armenian side on this issue; we are in constant contact. If the goal of this road is to expand opportunities and support peace, we are not opposed,” the Iranian diplomat replied.

Since Washington’s agreement of August 8, 2025, neighboring Iran has periodically voiced concerns. They officially state that they trust the Armenian side’s assurances regarding TRIPP, but on the other hand, they express fears that the US could use the program to further its security policy. Late last year, an advisor to Iran’s spiritual leader bluntly stated that TRIP is the same as the “Zangezur Corridor,” and that Tehran had initially opposed the project.

“Given the United States’ hostile attitude toward Tehran, we had concerns that we discussed with our Armenian colleagues in a very cordial atmosphere, and they assured us that Armenia would not become a platform for actions against Iran. We have mutual trust,” Shirgolami said.
