Iran has begun building walls on its eastern borders to counter security threats, said Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goodarzi, commander of the country’s border police, Mehr reported.
According to the Iranian general, the initiative is aimed at preventing smuggling of fuel, goods and, in particular, drugs, as well as solving the problem of illegal immigration.
He stressed that the priority of this project is to ensure the security of the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“Based on security assessments and military considerations, the most important areas are the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, which account for 80% of drug trafficking to Iran,” General Goodarzi explained.
He said that the construction of border walls has already begun in the southern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, as well as in the provinces of Khorasan Razavi, noting that the next stage will cover the provinces of Ilam, Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan, located on the western borders of the country. General Goodarzi said funding for the project had been secured and the focus was now on equipping construction sites.
