The court sentenced former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) to 20.5 years in prison in a corruption case involving the Brazilian construction corporation Odebrecht.
“The judicial authority sentenced former President of the Republic Alejandro Toledo to 20 years and 6 months in prison for committing crimes such as conspiracy and money laundering in the Interoceanic Highway case,” the country’s judicial system page on X says.
According to the court, Toledo helped Odebrecht obtain a contract to build two sections of the highway connecting Brazil and Peru for a $35 million bribe.
Toledo was arrested in April 2023 by US authorities in the state of California, where he had lived in recent years, and extradited to his homeland. An arrest warrant for the former president had been in effect since 2017.
