Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania promised to resign when protesters leave the parliament building in Sukhum, RIA Novosti reports.
“When they leave the building, I will write a letter of resignation, and we will see how much support they receive at the new elections,” he said at a meeting with the people in the village of Tamysh.
The leader of Abkhazia demanded that protesters vacate the government building complex, and then he will be ready to call new elections. In the event of his resignation, the vice president will govern the country, Bzhania added.
At the same time, he expressed his readiness to put forward his candidacy in the elections.
Yesterday morning, people began to gather near the parliament at the call of the opposition. The highest legislative body was supposed to consider the issue of ratifying the intergovernmental agreement with Russia on investments. But by decision of the deputies, the meeting was cancelled.
The opposition demanded Bzhania’s resignation and holding early presidential elections. He refused yesterday, saying that he would continue his work.
