Iran urges key regional players to make efforts to counter terrorism in Syria

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the resurgence of terrorism in Syria and its spread in the region will pose a serious threat to peace and security in the region, calling on key regional players to make efforts to counter the threat, Mehr reported.

In a phone call with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdellatti on Wednesday, Araqchi said it was imperative to counter the serious threat of terrorism through diplomatic efforts and consultations among influential regional players. The Iranian Foreign Minister reportedly detailed the results of his talks with senior Syrian and Turkish officials during his visits to Damascus and Ankara, and reiterated Tehran’s firm stance on supporting the Syrian government, army and people in the fight against terrorist groups.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister, for his part, said that he had held phone talks with a number of his counterparts in recent days and stressed that Egypt’s policy is to support Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and legal institutions. The Iranian and Egyptian foreign ministers also agreed to maintain more contacts on regional developments.
