Yonhap: South Korean opposition initiates bill to investigate coup

Representatives of the Toburo Democratic Party, the leading opposition party in parliament, have initiated bills to conduct a special investigation against President Yoon Seok-yol on suspicion of rebellion (treason) and against the first lady on suspicion of securities fraud. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency.

Toburo deputies submitted documents to the relevant body of the parliamentary apparatus.

On the evening of December 3, Yoon Seok-yol, in order to combat “pro-North Korean elements” and the paralysis of the executive branch due to the actions of the parliamentary opposition, introduced martial law, which was lifted about six hours later. On December 4, the opposition initiated impeachment proceedings in parliament, believing that the president violated the constitution, since there were no grounds for martial law.

On December 7, the parliament of the Republic of Korea held a vote on the impeachment of the president, which was not declared due to a boycott by the ruling party. Earlier, Yun Seok-yeol apologized to his fellow citizens and said that he entrusted state affairs, including the issue of his term in office, to the ruling party and the government.
