Record heatwave hits South Africa

With the arrival of summer in the Southern Hemisphere on December 1, unprecedented heat has begun in most of South Africa, the country’s meteorological service reports.

Historical maximum temperatures are recorded in a number of regions of South Africa. The air temperature reached 45.9 degrees Celsius this week in Twee Riviere town of the Eastern Cape province. The hot air current came to the country from the Kalahari Desert, the second largest desert in Africa.

A water conservation regime has been introduced from 6pm to 6am in several areas of Johannesburg.

A critical situation is emerging in South Africa’s water reserves as well, as water sources are drying up. As a result, animals are traveling considerable distances in search of water.
