Chinese authorities have carried out the death penalty for Li Jianping, former secretary of the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone Work Committee (the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China), who embezzled 3.06 billion yuan (about $426 million) through theft and bribery. This was reported by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China.
According to his WeChat page, Li Jianping fraudulently took possession of more than 1.43 billion yuan ($199 million) from an unnamed state-owned company. In addition, he received 577 million yuan ($80 million) in bribes and embezzled 1.06 million yuan ($147 million). Some of these funds have never been returned.
In addition to bribery and embezzlement, Li Jianping was also found guilty of “condoning illegal and criminal activities.” All of the executed man’s personal property was confiscated. Before his death, he was allowed to meet with his relatives and loved ones.
