EDB: Russia remains the largest investor in the South Caucasus

The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has published a new analytical bulletin on mutual investments in the Eurasian region, which showed high dynamics in the South Caucasus.

In the first half of 2024, the volume of accumulated foreign direct investment in Armenia increased from 37 to 841 million dollars, while the country is implementing 10 investment projects in the region.

According to the report, the volume of attracted investments in the period from 2016 to the first half of 2024 was distributed among the countries of the South Caucasus as follows: Azerbaijan attracted $5.82 billion, Armenia – 3.68 billion, Georgia – 2.86 billion. At the same time, Russia, which received investments in the amount of $3.11 billion, remains the largest investor in the region with investments of $38.27 billion.

The bulk of Armenian investments are directed to Russia, a smaller share – to Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine.

In the Eurasian region, where the total volume of accumulated mutual direct investment reached $46.1 billion, the largest recipients were Kazakhstan ($10.4 billion), Uzbekistan ($10.2 billion) and Azerbaijan ($5.8 billion).

Private companies account for 68% of accumulated mutual investment. In terms of industry, the leaders are the raw materials sector (35.6%), manufacturing (15.2%) and the transport and logistics sector (11.6%). The agro-industrial complex is developing particularly dynamically, demonstrating sustainable growth since 2016 with an average annual rate of 6.7%.
