Georgian President Announces Creation of Council to Prepare for Parliamentary Elections

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has announced the creation of a new council, which, according to her, will deal with the issue of preparing new parliamentary elections, Novosti-Gruzia reports.

“A document is already being prepared, and it will most likely be ready tomorrow — it will describe all the minimum conditions for holding elections, which will take place very soon. <> These new elections will really be new, new forces will probably emerge. We must be ready for all this,” Zurabishvili noted.

The day before, at a rally, she gave the ruling party six days to set a date for new elections — Georgian Dream called this demand ridiculous and ignored it.

“The crisis is intensifying and deepening day by day, which the ruling party either does not see, or even more, I would say that it closes its eyes, does not want to see and acts as if everything is fine. As if the main thing is to light up the city or set up a Christmas village, or put up a Christmas tree, or hold a concert – when no one is in a festive mood. At least not even those who consider themselves winners,” Zurabishvili said.

She stressed that no matter how much the ruling party turns a blind eye to the situation in the country, “it cannot change this reality, and reality is what is in front of us, what we all see, feel and what we have to fix – this is a crisis.”

At the moment, it is still unclear how Zurabishvili is going to act on December 29 – two days before the New Year, the Georgian Dream has scheduled the inauguration of the new president.

At the same time, Zurabishvili said today that if an agreement with the Georgian Dream on new parliamentary elections is not reached by December 29, after December 29 “we will reach the elections by the fall of the regime.” She did not explain what form of “regime collapse” she had in mind, but reiterated that she had no intention of resigning as president.
